The
history of Beverly-Riverside Lodge No. 107 follows two distinct
trails which both start and finish together. Beverly
Lodge No. 107 came into existence in the late 1880's when several
Members of Burlington Lodge No. 32 petitioned the Grand Master to
Warrant a new Lodge in Beverly. Beverly's first Master and his
officers proved themselves proficient in the work and in 1870 Grand
Lodge granted a Warrant and the number 107 for the new Lodge.
It
is custom, whenever a new Lodge comes into existence that it receives
the next number in line. Since there were 106 Lodges
at the time of Beverly's warranting, it received the number 107.
The
late 1800's were also a time for expansion of the rank of Masonry.
Membership was growing rapidly and continued to do so until the
first world war. In
the early 1900's a similar circumstance happened in Beverly Lodge
when a group of members who resided in Riverside decided that they
wanted to create a Lodge based in their town. They
petitioned the Grand Lodge for a warrant and it was granted in 1908.
The new Lodge was named Riverside Lodge and received the number 187.
Both
of these Lodges existed on their own for nearly a century.
Beverly Lodge survived two fires, one that destroyed the original
Lodge building. In the early 1900's, Beverly Lodge had a new
three story Lodge hall built on Cooper Street in Beverly. At the
time this was a state of the art building. In fact, it was one
the first buildings in New Jersey to incorporate both brick and
steel in its construction. Riverside
Lodge met in the second floor of a building in downtown Riverside.
In the early 1960's several members pulled their resources and
financed a new building built on Chester Avenue. This building
also used the latest in construction technology.
In
the late 1990's both Lodges fell on hard times. Beverly Lodge
was in financial trouble and Riverside Lodge was struggling with
membership and officer problems. Then Worshipful Masters Bill
Moliens and Owen Brennan met to discuss a possible consolidation of
the two Lodges. In
2000, both Lodges voted and approved the consolidation of our two
Lodges to become Beverly-Riverside No. 107. It is also the
custom of the consolidated/merged Lodge to take the oldest 9lesser)
of the numbers of the involved Lodges. In
2001, Most Worshipful Wayne E. Hackney, Grand Master of Mason for
the State of New Jersey presented our Lodge with its Warrant at the
Grand Lodge Communication in Atlantic City. Worshipful Brother
Allen Naese was the first Worshipful Master of Beverly-Riverside No.
107.
A
consolidation/merger of Lodges can be a very trying thing for those
involved. Members can get easily hurt and offended by the
events that take place. Our new Lodge was not without it's
tough times. Today, though we stand as a proud Lodge of Master
Masons united in our own small society.
